ABOUT THE ROLE
FNA Transmission is seeking an experienced Automotive Machinist to lead torque converter rebuilding operations at our Wakefield, MA facility. This is a highly specialized role requiring precision machining proficiency, welding certification, and applied knowledge of torque converter construction and hydraulic operating principles.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform complete torque converter rebuilds: disassembly, component inspection, parts replacement, and reassembly to specification
Execute lathe turning, surface grinding, and facing operations on converter housings, hubs, and internal components
Weld converter shells (TIG/MIG); conduct leak-down and pressure testing post-assembly
Inspect pump gears, stator clutch packs, turbine assemblies, needle bearings, and lock-up clutch components for wear and dimensional compliance
Balance rebuilt assemblies and verify all tolerances against manufacturer specifications
Maintain machining equipment and calibration records
Document rebuild specifications and component traceability for each unit
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience rebuilding torque converters or precision powertrain / hydraulic rotating assemblies
Proficient with lathe, surface grinder, and related precision machining equipment
TIG welding certification preferred; MIG acceptable
Applied knowledge of torque converter operation: fluid coupling dynamics, stall speed, lock-up clutch, and stator function
Ability to read engineering drawings and work to tight dimensional tolerances
Formal machining apprenticeship, precision machining vocational program, or equivalent experience
Disciplined approach to quality assurance, traceability, and documentation
Valid driver’s license required
